This is an original hand-painted Thangka of Shakyamuni Buddha (Siddhartha Gautama), the historical Buddha and founder of Buddhism. Painted on handmade cotton canvas with natural pigments, stone colors, and gold, this sacred artwork reflects both artistic mastery and deep spiritual symbolism.
About Shakyamuni Buddha
Born as Siddhartha Gautama, crown prince of the Shakya kingdom in the Himalayan foothills of present-day Nepal, he renounced royal life to seek the truth of suffering and its end. Through courage, wisdom, and compassion, he attained perfect enlightenment, becoming the Buddha of the present age. His teachings have guided countless beings toward peace and liberation for over 2,500 years.
Symbolism in the Painting
Bhumisparsha Mudra (Earth-Touching Gesture): His right hand reaches toward the earth, calling it to witness his victory over Mara, the demon of illusion and desire.
Dhyana Mudra (Meditation Gesture): His left hand rests in his lap, symbolizing inner stillness and meditation.
Begging Bowl: In some depictions, he holds the monk’s bowl filled with three nectars, signifying his triumph over death, delusion, and suffering.
This posture, known as “Buddha Shakyamuni Conquering the Demons”, represents the moment of his full enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree.
