This is an original hand-painted Thangka of Shakyamuni Buddha (Siddhartha Gautama), the historical Buddha and root teacher of Buddhism as we know it today. Painted with natural pigments, stone colors, and gold on handmade cotton canvas, this master-quality artwork reflects both deep spiritual meaning and fine craftsmanship.
About Shakyamuni Buddha
Born in the Shakya kingdom in southern Nepal during the 6th century BCE, Siddhartha Gautama renounced palace life in pursuit of truth. Through compassion, wisdom, and determination, he achieved perfect enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, becoming Shakyamuni Buddha—the Buddha of our present age. His teachings continue to inspire peace and transformation across the world.
Symbolism in the Painting
Bhumisparsha Mudra (Earth Witness Gesture): His right hand touches the earth, calling it to witness his triumph over Mara, the demon of illusion.
Dhyana Mudra (Meditation Gesture): His left hand rests in his lap, symbolizing inner peace and deep meditation.
Begging Bowl: In some depictions, he holds a monk’s bowl containing three nectars, representing victory over death, delusion, and suffering.
This posture is known as “Buddha Shakyamuni Conquering the Demons”, capturing the exact moment of enlightenment.
