This original hand-painted Tibetan Thangka depicts Chenrezig (Avalokiteshvara), the Bodhisattva of Compassion, revered across all schools of Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism. Painted on handmade cotton canvas with gold dust and natural stone pigments, this Thangka embodies divine artistry and profound spiritual meaning.
Chenrezig is the personification of infinite compassion—the being who vowed to remain in samsara until all sentient beings are free from suffering. His name means “The One Who Looks with an Unwavering Eye,” symbolizing his boundless empathy and awareness of all beings’ cries for help.
In this Thousand-Armed form, Chenrezig radiates immense benevolence. His eleven heads represent the eleven directions of the universe, while his thousand arms, each with an eye in the palm, symbolize his omnipresent vigilance and limitless power to aid all beings.
In his hands, he holds sacred objects with deep symbolism:
A white lotus, representing purity and the unfolding of spiritual wisdom.
A crystal mala (rosary), signifying continuous compassionate activity.
A vase of nectar, representing the elixir of immortality and healing.
The wish-fulfilling jewel (Chintamani), symbolizes enlightenment and infinite generosity.
Chenrezig’s compassion is further invoked through the sacred mantra:
“Om Mani Padme Hum” — meaning “Hail to the Jewel in the Lotus” — a mantra that awakens loving-kindness, purity, and selfless service in the practitioner’s heart.
This Thangka serves not only as a spiritual artwork but as a meditative focus that helps cultivate compassion, patience, and inner peace. The intricate detailing and harmonious balance of colors reflect both artistic mastery and spiritual devotion.
