Vairochana – The Primordial Buddha of Wisdom and Light

Vairochana (Sanskrit: Vairocana; Tibetan: སྤྱན་རས་གཟིགས་, Nampar Nangdzé) is the central and primordial Buddha among the Five Dhyani Buddhas in Vajrayana Buddhism. He embodies the Dharmakaya, or the Buddha's truth body, and symbolizes the all-encompassing wisdom of the Dharmadhatu, representing the true nature of reality.

Size of Painting: 18-inches x 24-inches ( 46cm x 619 cm)

🔆 Symbolism & Meaning
Name Meaning: “Vairochana” means “He Who is Like the Sun” or “Radiating Light” – a reflection of his all-illuminating wisdom.

Wisdom Aspect: Vairochana embodies the Wisdom of the Dharmadhatu – the wisdom of the absolute truth that transcends dualistic thinking.

Transformation: He transforms ignorance and delusion (the root cause of suffering) into universal understanding.

Element: Space or Ether – the formless, all-pervading element.

Direction: Center – he sits at the heart of the Mandala of the Five Buddhas, representing the source of all enlightened activity.

Color: White – symbolizing purity, the absence of defilements, and ultimate truth.

Mudra (Hand Gesture):

Often shown with the Dharmachakra Mudra – the gesture of turning the Wheel of Dharma, which represents the continuous teaching of the path to enlightenment.

🖼️ Iconography & Depiction
In traditional Tibetan Thangka art, Vairochana is depicted:
White in color, seated in full lotus posture (vajra asana)
Hands in Dharmachakra Mudra (teaching gesture), sometimes holding the Wheel of Dharma (Dharmachakra)
Seated on a lion throne, symbolizing royal spiritual authority and power
Surrounded by halos or mandorlas symbolizing his radiant wisdom
Positioned at the center of the Five Dhyani Buddhas’ Mandala, with Akshobhya (East), Ratnasambhava (South), Amitabha (West), and Amoghasiddhi (North) around him

🧘 Spiritual Practice & Role
Meditation on Vairochana helps purify ignorance and delusion, leading to a direct realization of emptiness and ultimate reality.

He is critical in higher Tantric practices and is often visualized in Mahamudra and Dzogchen traditions.

Associated with the crown chakra (Sahasrara), he opens access to the pure mind of enlightenment.

🛕 Vairochana in Buddhist Scriptures and Art
In texts such as the Avatamsaka Sutra, Vairochana is seen as the cosmic Buddha from whom all other Buddhas emanate.

He is often worshipped in the context of the Five Dhyani Buddhas or the Vajradhatu Mandala, particularly in Shingon, Tibetan Vajrayana, and Chinese Esoteric Buddhism.

In Japanese Buddhism (Shingon), he is known as Dainichi Nyorai, the "Great Sun Buddha," and holds a central position in the Taizōkai (Womb Realm Mandala) and Kongōkai (Diamond Realm Mandala).
