This is an original hand-painted master-quality Vajrakilaya Tibetan Thangka Painting from Nepal. The Vajrakilaya is a wrathful form of the Vajrasattva. He holds the dagger, phurba, or kīla in his hand. Vajrakilaya is commonly represented with three faces of different colors in a crown of skulls. The central face is blue, the left is red, and the right is white. He crushes demons under his feet, representing the obstacles to spiritual realization.
The Vajrakīlaya Tantra describes a blazing dark blue weapon appearing in space. This weapon is extremely powerful and difficult to destroy. From a relative perspective, we possess this karmic imprint or habitual pattern of a dualistic perception of self and others, and the dark blue weapon of HUM shatters that perception.
The doctrines of Vajrakīla were transmitted to the human realm, where they were spread in India by Indrabhuti, Dhanasaṁskṛta, Śrīsiṁha, Prabhahasti, and an unnamed kāpālika brahmin. In Nepal, they were taught by Śīlamañju and Śākyadevī. Śīlamañju is said to have taught a prostitute by the name of Śānti who, in her turn, transmitted the doctrines to Guṇapatala (a prince of Nepal) so that they then became widely known in that country, and Śākyadevī is said to have taught them to Dharmakośa by whom they were subsequently propagated throughout Oḍḍiyāna. The doctrines are also said to have been trained in Khotan by Vairocana and in Tibet by Padmasambhava, Vairocana and Vimalamitra.”
The size of the painting is 20 x 29 Inches ( 51 x 74 cm), measured without the surrounding border.
