This is a master-quality hand-painted Tibetan Thangka of Vajrakilaya, a powerful tantric deity revered in the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. Vajrakilaya represents the enlightened activity of all Buddhas and is known for removing spiritual obstacles and negative forces.
Padmasambhava originally transmitted the teachings and practices of Vajrakilaya to his closest disciples to overcome obstacles to the spread of the Dharma in Tibet. Because of this, Vajrakilaya practice is considered one of the most powerful methods for clearing hindrances and purifying the spiritual path.
At the center of the painting, Vajrakilaya appears in a fierce tantric form with three heads, six arms, and four legs. In his central hands, he holds the sacred phurba dagger while embracing his consort Khorlo Gyedunma. The phurba symbolizes penetrating wisdom that cuts through ignorance and illusion.
Symbolism in the Artwork
Phurba Ritual Dagger
The three-sided blade represents the cutting of the three root delusions: ignorance, hatred, and attachment. The handle symbolizes wisdom, while the blade represents skillful means.
Wrathful Attributes
Vajrakilaya holds vajras, jewels, and a trident, showing his indestructible power and his ability to destroy obstacles across the three realms of existence.
Sacred Garments
He wears elephant skin across his back, symbolizing the destruction of ignorance. The tiger-skin garment represents the transformation of anger into wisdom. A necklace of severed heads symbolizes transcendence over ordinary perception.
Union with the Consort
His consort, Khorlo Gyedunma, holds a skull cup and wears a crown of five skulls, representing the purification of the five aggregates. Their union symbolizes the balance of wisdom and method in Vajrayana practice.
Flames of Wisdom
Both figures stand surrounded by blazing flames representing enlightened awareness that burns away delusion.
