Wheel of Life Bhavachakra Tibetan Thangka – Hand-Painted Samsara Mandala Buddhist Art

This is an original, hand-painted Tibetan Thangka of the Wheel of Life, also known as Bhavachakra or Samsara Mandala. Buddhist monks and teachers widely use this sacred image as a visual guide to understanding the Buddha's teachings and the causes of suffering.

The Wheel of Life explains how beings remain trapped in samsara, the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth, and how liberation is possible through wisdom and proper understanding. For centuries, this mandala has been painted on the walls of Himalayan monasteries as a teaching and meditation tool.

Meaning & Symbolism

Central Circle – The Three Poisons
At the center are three animals:

Pig – ignorance

Bird – attachment

Snake – anger

These three poisons keep beings trapped in suffering. Ignorance gives rise to attachment and anger, and together they deepen delusion.

Second Ring – The Wheel of Karma
This ring is divided into two halves:

The dark side shows the results of negative actions.

The light side shows the results of positive actions and spiritual progress.

This represents the law of cause and effect.

Six Realms of Samsara
The next ring shows the six realms of existence:

Gods
Demi-gods
Humans
Animals
Hungry ghosts
Hell beings

All beings move between these realms based on their actions and karma.

Outer Ring – The Twelve Links of Dependent Origination
The outermost ring illustrates the twelve stages that keep beings bound to samsara, from ignorance to aging and death. These scenes explain how suffering begins and how it can be ended.

Yama, Lord of Death
The entire wheel is held by Yama, reminding us that all conditioned existence is impermanent.

Above the Wheel
The Buddha points toward the open sky, showing that liberation from samsara is possible.
