Yamantaka Thangka – Wrathful Protector, Hand-Painted Tibetan Masterpiece
This is an original hand-painted Tibetan Thangka depicting Yamantaka, the fierce and powerful Buddhist deity known as the Conqueror of Death. This master-quality painting represents the wrathful form of Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom. Though terrifying in appearance, Yamantaka’s wrath is an expression of compassion, intended to eliminate ignorance, fear, and obstacles for practitioners.
Iconography & Symbolism
Seven Heads & Multiple Limbs
Yamantaka appears with seven wrathful heads, each crowned by a central buffalo head, and numerous arms and legs. These features represent his unlimited strength and ability to overcome all forms of ignorance and opposing forces.
Wrathful Expression
His flaming hair, sharp teeth, and protruding tongue highlight his fierce nature. These features are not evil but symbolize the destruction of inner demons and negative emotions.
Sacred Implements
His central hands hold a curved knife and a skull bowl, while he embraces his consort, Vajra Vetali. Other hands carry bells, tiger claws, swords, and severed heads—each representing wisdom destroying illusion.
Manjushri’s Peaceful Head
At the crown rests the gentle face of Manjushri, reminding us that Yamantaka’s fierce form comes from pure compassion and enlightened wisdom.
Composition
Yamantaka stands on an orange sun disc above a multicolored lotus. Around him, blazing flames of wisdom rise, symbolizing purification.
His left legs defeat birds and gods, while his right legs subdue animals and deities—showing the triumph over ego, delusion, and destructive forces.
